The Mission Editor is a tool which allows people to create maps for the various Dawn of War games: Dawn of War, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade.

The Tools

Object Placement

Adds modelled objects to the maps which show up when playing the game, to choose click the list on the right and find the object desired to add that object there.

Tips:

  1. Hold shift then clicking the RMB, raises or lowers the object.
  2. Clicking the LMB then moving the mouse turns the object.

Group Entities:

When you are making a large map it is wise to use group entities. Gruop entities are basically groups of entities (objects) that can be imported and exported to other maps. They also make moving multiple objects at once alot easier. For example: istead of assembling each building in an urban map idividually you can make a few on a sparate map and then use those few on the map in different places instead of spending lots of time making more. To make group entites follow these steps:

  1. lace a group of objects that you want together. Then select them all and click on the 'Groups' drpdown menu.
  2. Select 'Create Entity Group' and type in the name for the group in the box that pops up, and click OK.
  3. Keep the group selected and go to 'File,' 'Export,' then 'Export Selected Entities.'
  4. Choose a folder to put it in and a name to save it as.
  5. Once this is done you can import it to any map you want. Once its there you can go to the 'Group Entity List' and select it to move it around the map easily.

Decals

Decals are often used in DoW editing. It places a litttle picture on top of the ground to look like something else (although it takes a while to load). Decals are often used for the more complex maps and are often used very intricately.

Tips:

  1. To change its size hold shift, then click the LMB and move the mouse up or down to change it's size.
  2. There is also a size setting near the top, this is useful for when you use some decals a lot more than others

Markers

The Markers Tool is most often for Scar coding. This tool can affect AI.

Heightmap

This tool changes the map's landscape. Using set value tool raises or lowers the land. Smoothing smooths the landscape (this can additive or subtractive).

Tips:

  1. Feather tool is used for making craters.
  2. Additive and Subtractive values can be altered through the strength setting (100 & 0 being the highest and lowest settings respectively).
  3. Presets have een added for the more common of values.

Texture Stamping

Texture Stamping changes the color of some decals.

Detail Map Editor

The DME adds mass decals to one spot. This way saves a lot of time in comparison to placing decals individually, however this way is not always the best way to go about mass decaling a map.

Terrain Type Editor

Terrain Type Editor sets wether, if a unit moves there, dust is kicked up etc, this can also work for snow, water etc.

Impass Map Editor

Impass Map Editor sets wether a unit can move to that location or not.
